Northern Line tube closures planned

10 September 2009

Local residents could be facing major disruption over a long period if private maintenance firm, Tube Lines, gets its way.

They want to close the southern
section of the Northern Line at 10pm
on weekdays to help them install a
new signalling system. The signalling
improvement will see capacity increase
by 20%.

Tube Lines have already closed
temporarily individual stations but local
people have been able to work around
this. We have never had Clapham
South, Balham and Tooting Bec closed
at the same time so commuters have
been able to use an alternative station.

Under the current proposals every
station on the southern stretch of
the Line would close at 10pm on
weekdays. Tube Lines say that this
is necessary to get the signalling
improved on time and to avoid any
weekend closures.

The approach was tested on the
Victoria Line over the last two years,
causing lots of disruption.
Richard Tracey, our local Assembly
Member has already raised this issue
with London Underground after
Conservative campaigners, Alex Jacob
and John Locker - who both use the
tube to get to work - raised it with him.

Local Conservative Councillor, Alex
Jacob said, “I think that we need to be
told what other approaches have been
considered and understand what the
level of disruption will be - commuters
should decide not managers”.
